       RA affects about 1% of the population and it is two to three times more prevalent in women than men, affecting women commonly between the fourth and sixth decades of life. It is a systemic illness and may affect many parts of the body including the eyes, heart, lungs, skin and peripheral nerves but it is principally a disease of joints, the synovial lining being the most important target (figure 1). It is the most potentially crippling of all the arthritic conditions (figure 2).
