Transcription within the cell nucleus is shown. In regards to our story line, this process could represent the cells' normal metabolism and molecular turnover, including the transcription of mRNA for the production of MHC Class I molecules. On the other hand, the Class I DNA virus reproduces itself by commandeering this cell machinery, and both DNA and RNA here would represent viral proteins. Translation takes place in the cytosol exclusively for proteins that remain inside the cell, and which are not associated with the endomembrane system, such as is shown here. This would also be the case initially for many viral proteins, once the virus has commandeered the cell's protein making machinery. |
