Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common inflammatory destructive arthritis among Caucasians. It is characterized by a symmetrical polyarthritis involving especially the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and metacarpal phalangeal (MCP) joints of the hands.

Figure 1. A 42 year old woman with RA. Note the marked swelling of the MCP and PIP joints of the hands with relative sparing of the DIP joints. The ulnar drift deformity is developing more prominently in the left hand.
