       the aging of the population. The mortality within the first 6 months following a hip fracture is greater than 20%, and the majority of the survivors do not return to their previous functional status.
       Osteopenia and osteoporosis is readily diagnosed by the use of a number of measurement techniques. Two of the most commonly employed methods include dual xray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT). The relative merits of these methods are shown in figure 7.
