This xray of the thoracic spine in a patient with AS demonstrates a lateral syndesmophyte (bony overgrowth, white heavy headed arrow ) The red arrow shows a space where there are only degenerative changes. These bony growths can occur at all vertebral levels and result in a ridgid spine that is refered to as a "bamboo spine" because of its appearance on xray. 640 x 480 pixels 60kbs photo CAC
