In addition to producing molecules used to construct cartilage, chondrocytes also secrete enzymes that facilitate the breakdown of the extracellular matrix. Metalloproteases (MMPs), so called because they contain heavy metal catalysts, are important and include collagenases and gelatinases, amongst others.
